AGENYI ATTAH GIVES SCHOLARSHIPS TO OFANTE COMMUNITY WORTH 10 MILLION NAIRA: THE CASE OF SUSTAINABLE SUPPORT FOR EDUCATION: The Chief Ogwu Onoja SAN Example:*
Coming at a time of renewed calls by the United Nations and other regional agencies for increased funding in education, science and technology, the unveiling of a N10M education endowment fund by Chief Ogwu Onoja SAN in Ofante, Olamaboro LGA of Kogi is commendable and must be heralded and applauded by every man and woman of goodwill.
In my opinion, it is both timely and well conceived in apt consideration of the peculiar needs of the intended beneficiaries majority of whom are indigent students with emphasis on the girl child which has been a major focal point of global development agencies.
Chief Ogwu Onoja SAN is unarguably a household name in the practice of the legal profession in Nigeria and a regional force to reckon with in advanced legal studies, international jurisprudence, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution as an emerging tool of conflict resolution.
His decision to at this time of palpable economic strife and unbalanced government policy unveil a N10M endowment fund to focus on education is a testimony of His belief in mass education as a veritable tool of local community development, human capacity enhancement and socio-economic emancipation.
A global philosophy in the development of emerging economies especially in third world countries suggests that no society can develop beyond the quality of education it offers her citizens.
It is against this backdrop that I opine that Chief Ogwu Onoja SAN has by this recent action shown a rare sense of Corporate Social Responsibility by choosing to directly impact a sector that is about the most neglected even in the national budget.
It is only for the records that I feel compelled to state here and now that for Chief Ogwu Onoja SAN, it’s has been a tradition of continued assistance to His Alma Mater in Ofante Community even as there are many more testimonies of His philanthropic gesture to both His immediate community in Kogi State and society at large.
There’s no limit to giving back to one’s immediate society but this recent action happened in a manner that is rare and unprecedented bearing in mind that the donor has never been involved in partisan politics neither does He have an political ambition.
Religious and educational institutions are about the most important simulators of human capacity advancement. It is perhaps in further recognition of their importance that as part of the events culminating in the unveiling of the N10M education endowment fund, a N1M grant was also released to the local denomination of the United Evangelical Church to advance the commitment of the church to social welfare.
This is besides an initial N1M granted St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Ogugu in 2017 during Her annual harvest and thanksgiving event which held in November.
Chief Ogwu Onoja SAN has set a pace and clearly raised the bar in direct community development. He has set a sterling example worthy of emulation which doubles as a challenge to other well meaning individuals.
It is inappropriate for prominent citizens to identify with their communities only when there’s a predetermined benefit to be derived because the task of nation building actually starts for the development of local communities.
Beyond everything else, this is a wake up call to the various tiers of government, their agencies and other individuals who I believe must rise to the occasion and tow the line of Chief Ogwu Onoja SAN who has led the pack of individuals who believe in sustained support for education.
Thank you Chief Ogwu Onoja SAN.
History will not forget you; posterity will be fair on you and your descendants.
